BGH Classic Pack - Remake-Apolooza! Vol. 3

Remakes: can't live with'em, can't murder everyone involved with'em. The silver lining of course is that modern horror's remake insanity has given rise to some epic podcast episodes. In previous classic packs we've combined some of the best and worst of recent horror remakes.

Horror By the Sub-Genres: Redneck Horror

Ed. Note: BGH welcomes Chris and Kathleen, who are embarking on a project to explore the many hidden corners of the horror world in the new series: Horror by the Sub-Genre

In 1972, British director John Boorman created the grand-daddy of all redneck horror films, “Deliverance”. Though its subject matter was distinctly American, it was perfectly appropriate that a man from a country almost two thousand years old would remind us that we, at the time barely on the cusp of our two hundredth birthday, were not quite as civilized as we would like to think.

Posters: "Mother's Day" has one, street date

We checked out Darren Lynn Bousman's "Mother's Day" (a remake of the "classic" Troma film) a few months back on the podcast and the response, for the most part, was "thumbs up". Your chance to see it comes on May 8th when it hits DVD. The cover art goes full "Rebecca De Mornay", and frankly makes it look like a Lifetime movie. Trust us, it's not. (click to enhance)

To help my daughter sleep we have this stuffed animal with a small radio in the back that plays the sounds of rain falling or a river flowing for 45 minutes when you push a button. This morning at 5am somehow she rolled over in her sleep in pushed the button so I was awoken to the sound of running water blasting in our bedroom over the baby monitor. I've never believed in ghosts but for a split second this morning I honestly thought our house was haunted.

Because he isn't busy enough Guillermo del Toro has decided to take on the producer role for a new CG animated flick titled "Day Of the Dead". Jorge R. Gutierrez will direct the love story in the vein of "Romeo and Juliet" set against a Mexican “Day of the Dead” backdrop. That "Haunted Mansion" flick is still happening, right? I've been excited about that for over a year now and I'm starting to get a little pissy.

I have no idea what this means but I bet Casey is going to be as giddy as a school girl about it. Hammer Films has decided to open their script archive to the public. So I guess that means we can go there and just start reading stuff? I haven't watched a lot of their movies but from what I can gather the best part of them is the girls with all their parts hanging out so I'm not really sure how reading is going to make me happy.

Set your hunk-o-meter to stun folks because it's been confirmed that Michael Fassbender will in fact star in Ridley Scott 's next film which is titled "The Counselor". The movie is about a big time lawyer who gets mixed up with the drug selling business... and then aliens attack everyone. That last part isn't true but the thing sounds kind of boring right now so I hope they're open to suggestions.

If you kids can remember all the way back to our "Mother's Day" remake episode then you know the gang was all pretty positive on the film. I think. Honestly I can't remember back that far but let's just go with it. The point is the Darren Lynn Bousman film finally has a release date of May 8th for DVD and Blu-Ray and will also be getting a limited theater run starting May 4th. May the 4th be with you! I wonder if they thought of that when the picked the date. Man I hope so. I love that crap.

In Real People News:

Here's a fun story about a guy who broke into a house and started trying on clothes because he said a small Asian boy invited him. The Asian boy turned out to be a bunch of flowers but he apologized so all is forgiven. Just kidding he's in jail.

A man in Quebec is in hot water after he pulled a buddy of his down the street on a couch tied to his car. The kids call it "couch surfing" I guess and apparently his friend wiped out head first into an oncoming car. I don't know what the French word is for cowabunga.

Mother's Day (REVIEW)

The current trend toward remakes, reboots, and spin-offs has been with mainstream cinema for nigh on a decade. And with this tendency comes a host of voices declaring a creatively bankrupt and psychologically shallow cinema straining to keep up with digital media and the Internet. This weekend alone saw the release of “The Thing” and “Footloose.” But while I have rolled my eyes at more of these types of films than actually enjoyed them I do think it is a dismissive gesture to assume these films are merely quick cash grabs.

Hey do you like sexy ladies doing sexy dances? Sure, we all do! Well here's a new clip from "Mother's Day" which not only has that but also some creepy looking guys enjoying the show said sexy girl played by Briana Evigan is putting on. "Mother's Day" has no specific release date but should see the light of day sometime before the end of the summer. You should have read this entire post in the voice of Sally Struthers.

If there's one thing that "Repo! The Genetic Opera" taught us it's that not even Bill Moseley can save a crappy movie. But none the less he's been cast in the upcoming film "Leatherface 3D" in the role of Drayton, a nod to the role Jim Siedow played in the first two Texas Chainsaw films. So maybe old Billy boy can make this one magical. Maybe the next "2001 Maniacs" will win an Oscar, too.

I've never hid the fact that I believe Dennis Quaid is a cold blooded killer in real life. So I like to think the new movie "Beneath the Darkness" is something of a cry for help from the people in Hollywood who know the truth. In the movie Quaid plays a local hero who is actually turns out to be a psychopathic killer. This might be a documentary.

And lastly here's a new trailer for "Cowboys & Aliens" which hits theaters on July 29th. The trailer is chock full of, you guessed it, aliens and cowboys. Not necessarily in that order. But there's also about a half second shot of what looks to be a nude Olivia Wilde. Or it might of been Giada De Laurentiis from The Food Network. I always get those two mixed up.

In Real People News:

It's been a long long time since a news story actually made me chuckle but here's a heartwarming tale about a 18 year old New York kid who has been brought up charges after he tried to move his girlfriend's family into a mansion that he didn't own. Apparently he tried to convince them he inherited the house and even brought them over to show them the place. Unfortunately the real owners showed up during all this and ruined the entire thing. Party poopers.

There's tons or stories out there about pit bulls going ape shit and messing people up but I think this is the first time I've seen a story about two pit bulls that actually ripped a man's arm off. Don't worry, there's a happy ending to the whole thing though. That's right, they killed the dogs. Are you smiling now?

Horror Headlines: Tuesday February 1st, 2011

Sir Kevin Smith plans on trimming about 10 minutes of film from "Red State" before he hits the road on March 5th to screen the film to select audiences. With ticket prices for the screenings running anything from $50 to $125 I'm going to go ahead and say I don't give a crap how bad the movie is you leave in every freakin second of it before it turns out people are paying 100 bucks for a crappy 12 minute opus.

Wait a second isn't there already a remake of "Mother's Day" coming out"? What the hell is "Father's Day"? Where did this teaser come from? Who are these people? What are you doing Troma? Father get raped in this movie? What the hell is going on!? Where am I?

Good news everyone in Chicago, "Evil Bong 3D: The Wrath of Bong" will premier there on 4/20 (get it!?) and will feature "Sniff-O-Rama". What that pretty much means is the good people from Full Moon will give out a bunch of scratch-n-sniff cards when you go to see the movie and you can pretend like you're in the movie. I'm just guessing here but I'm thinking 95% of the cards will smell like weed.

What's got two thumbs and is only 85% sarcastic about being excited for "The Roommate" this Friday? This guy! Try not being fired up after checking out the 3 news clips from the movie that have hit the tubes. Just try you monsters!

In Real People News:

I've always been grossed out by free samples at grocery stores and here's proof I'm not crazy. A women in New Mexico claims she was given semen instead of the yogurt sample she expected recently at her local market. Apparently she recognized the taste immediately and spit the sample out. There's just too many jokes to be made here that I can't possibly choose one.

And here's a women from Florida who thought she was buying a novelty lighter that turned out to in fact be a real grenade. I had the same thing happen to me in high school when I went to light my smokes and ended up shooting three of the neighbors dogs.

Horror Headlines: Tuesday January 18th, 2011

This isn't a trailer for the "Mother's Day" remake but it is some sort of international sales promo that's found it's way online. Truth be told I've read the synopsis and watched the video and I'm still not 100% sure what the movie is about but it still looks pretty dandy. I assume it takes place on mothers day, right? Someone? I'm so confused and frightened.

"Gut" is a indie movie about two guys who end up watching some sort of awful movie based on one of the guy's suggestions and things get weird. They don't tell you what the movie is but my guess is it's some sort of snuff, autopsy or French film. Feel free to make your own guesses.

James Franco is set to direct and star in a new film about the real life slasher Richard Ramirez, better know as "The Night Stalker". Here's the fun part, Soundgarden front man Chris Cornell is also set to produce the film. Just tossing this out there, but what about getting that guy from Crazytown to compose the score?

If you had to put together the greatest cast of all time who would you pick? Don't bother thinking about it because the makers of "The Bleeding" have already done it. The answer? Vinnie Jones, Michael Matthias, Michael Madsen, DMX, Armand Assante and Kat Von D. Take a few minutes to compose yourself before checking out the clip because you might vomit from excitement.

In Real People News:

This is why the Druids invented cell phones with video cameras. The Boston Blazer's which are some sort of local team that play some sport are in trouble after their halftime show features three women dressed in next to nothing gave their mascot lap dances. The only disappointing part? The team apologized for the good time after the show. Boo Boston!

When a mother and daughter take out time to do things together it's a wonderful thing. That is of course unless that mother and daughter are torturing animals and keeping the corpses in their house like this duo on Long Island. Just to confirm that isn't a wonderful thing at all, unless you're some kind of sicko, then it's probably right up your alley.

Horror Headlines: Monday February 22nd, 2010

Wes Craven has announced that "Scream IV" will start shooting this coming May. He also let us know that he plans on directing until he drops dead. This is what people in the business call 'foreshadowing'.

Aussie director Mark Hartley, who previously brought you the documentary "Beyond Hollywood: The Wild Untold Story of Ozploitation" is a busy man these days. He's already pitching his next documentary on scream queens entitled "Machete Maidens Unleashed" as well as announced his plans to direct a remake of 1978's "Patrick".

In Real People News:

Swiss prostitutes are now being trained to use on-site defibrillators due to a rash of senior aged customers having heart attacks and dying on site. Which reminds me, I need to see my doctor before heading over there.

An Arcadia couple had a mind for some romantic car action on a secluded boat ramp until their plans were foiled by their car rolling into the water and floating down stream. The 41 year old man manged to swim to safety while his 67 year old girlfriend drowned in the accident.
