daybreakers

Horror Headlines: Tuesday, May 15th, 2011

I've officially not slept in over 24 hours. Today's news might be an incoherent mess. My big fear here is actually that it will be my best to date and I'll have to start not sleeping for most of the week. I do this for you people! I'm starting to smell.

ABC has officially picked up the new series "666 Park Avenue" which focuses on a couple who tend to an apartment building full of spooky time happenings. Not going to lie I thought they had picked up the show months ago but what the hell do I know. I could be pulling your leg about this entire thing. Maybe there isn't even a show. Maybe ABC isn't even a real station!

Most of us know Caroline Williams as Stretch from "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" but now the final girl has been cast in a new film titled "Contracted". The film is about a young woman who contracts what she thinks is your average run of the mill STD during a one night stand. Williams will play the girl's mother and confidant when that not so fresh feeling takes over.

BGH's own fancy lad Jon really loved "Daybreakers" so he'll be moistening up his pantaloons when he hears the news that the films directors, the Spierig Brothers, and Ethan Hawke are once again teaming up for a new film. Titled "Predestination", the film follows a secret Government agency who sends their grunts through time to stop murderers and terrorists. Pretty sure there's a new Bruce Willis movie titled "Looper" coming out with almost the same exact plot. I blame you, Jon.

The John Landis produced joint "Some Guy Who Kills People" will see it's way to a DVD release on July 3rd for your viewing pleasure. The DVD will be chock full of commentary, extra footage and the short that inspired the film about a man who snaps and takes out his anger on a group of High School bullies who captured and tortured him. There's also an ice cream parlor, so there's a little something for your sweet tooth, Hans.

J.J. Abrams has set the internet on fire once again as details for his next film "Super 8" begin to surface. Focused on a group of teens shooting a film on a Super 8 camera in the 70's or 80's, they find a nasty surprise when they finally get the film developed. Early speculation marks "Super 8" as a possible prequel to "Cloverfield".

The Spierig brothers, who last brought us the vampire thriller "Daybreakers", have signed on for a surprising new project; the boys plan on bringing us "Power of the Dark Crystal", a belated sequel to "The Dark Crystal"! Early reports state that they will continue with a mix of puppetry and live action actors, so Andy Serkis can turn his 3D motion capture device back off.

Sam Rockwell adds to his already varied resume as he signs on for Jon Favreau's comic book adaptation "Cowboys Vs. Aliens". Playing an old west bartender signing on to fight the little green men, this just further proves that I'll watch anything Sam Rockwell does, I don't really care what they cast him as.

During this past weekend's Free Comic Book day, a shop customer decided to change the rules a bit as he lifted a $150 copy of the X-Men Omnibus into his backpack. Thankfully, nerds will be nerds as the thief was detained by Spider Man as two Jedi Knights blocked the front doors of the shop.

Police were brought in to contain a drunken patron in a local KFC. When asked to identify himself, the drunken man stated "my name is Cheesy Beef Burrito". All while chewed food dribbled down his chin.

Lake County Sheriff's Detectives arrest a man on 200 counts of child pornography. Not bad enough on its own, the man was found working at Walt Disney World.

Numerologist Harold Camping says not to worry about the world coming to an end in 2012. According to his biblical studies, the world will end on May 21st, 2011. I wouldn't start worrying quite yet though because Camping originally predicted the end of the world in 1994, then decided he had a math error when Jesus never returned to earth.

While still far from an official announcement, in a recent interview with "Heeb Magazine" Harold Ramis declares that "Ghostbusters 3" will be coming in 2011.

Indie film efforts are usually a fairly brave endeavor for film makers. When decide to take on a post-apocalyptic setting with little money, its even more brave. Judging from the trailer for the upcoming post oil collapse adventure "Downstream", these guys may have actually pulled it off.

New stills from Vincenzo Natali's "Splice"... aka, "running with cats"? I'm just as confused as you are, but I know that this film looks prettye excellent. No word on US distribution yet but we'll let you know as soon as we find out.

"Daybreakers" Trailer

I was a pretty big fan of Michael and Peter Spierig's over-the-top 2003 horror/comedy "Undead" back in the day, going as far as to import a relatively expensive Region 4 DVD long before it arrived on American shores. Yeah, sometimes I can be pretty pathetic like that. And while I do believe the film had its share of problems, the good points, in this geek's humble opinion, greatly outweighed the bad. Besides, it's not everyday you get to watch an gun-crazy Australian redneck battle a flesh-eating zombie fish. I'm just saying.
