The Best Horror Films of 2013

While tallying the final votes for the annual BGH Top Ten countdown, one trend became immediately clear, even if it wasn’t obvious as the year progressed: 2013 was the year of the alt-horror movie. Some may argue the point, but depending on your tally, we’re looking at roughly three of the top ten and six of the top 15 films that could be considered “true” horror -- that is, film’s whose primary aim is to scare and excite.

The reality is that starting with the number one film, and moving down the top ten, most of these films come with caveats or tongues planted firmly in cheek.

Best of 2013 - Evan's Take

The Best!

10. Warm Bodies
2013 has been full of zombie movies, games, and books, so it was nice to have some comedy in the midst of all of the “serious” zombie business. Nick Holt managed to be an engaging and fun zombie just looking for some love.

9. Mama

Best of 2013 - Craigy's take.

The Best

10. Elysium
Allegory as subtle as a jack hammer didn't ruin a film that I admired for at least trying to be science fiction. The characters are conflicted and desperate, and seem to be living moment to moment. In an age were sci-fi films (really, all of genre) are dominated by super geniuses that always make the right moves, it was refreshing.

9. Evil Dead

Best of 2013 - Joe's Take

Top 10

10. American Mary
You had me at “stripper”.

9. World War Z
Was it true to the book? Was it better than the book? Did it stay true to the book? I have no idea, I never read the book. Brad Freakin' Pitt folks. All your arguments are negated by those two pools of fantasy we call eyes.

Best of 2013 - Casey's Take

Top 10

10. John Dies at the End
Again, being caught up simply in the story, “John Dies at the End” stands out for simply going against the grain. The story is nonsensical times, but it has a definite destination and it gets us there. It just has a lot of fun on the ride there. Formulas are easy, so it’s nice to see a film that throws said formula to the way side.

Best of 2013 - Chris and Kathy's Take

Top 10

10. Warm Bodies
On the podcast, Eric called it adorable; we would have said whimsical and charming. Regardless, if your cynicism is stowed in the overhead compartment during viewing, this should be a pretty enjoyable experience.

9. Mama

Best of 2013 - Charlie's Take

Top 10

10. Dark Skies
Simple but effective. 'Dark Skies' is a derivative alien invasion film but strong performances and solid effects combine for a decent horror romp.

9. This is the End
A riotous good time with a slew of famous faces keep this apocalyptic comedy generating laughs and fun throughout.

8. The World's End

Best of 2013 - Andy's Take

Top 10

10. Maniac & The Act of Killing
The only two films this year that nearly had me take a shower when they were over. One a remake of the 1980 cult classic the other a documentary that employs powerful reenactments of historical violent culls in the Philippines to reconcile the personal delusions of the perpetrators. Bonus points to Maniac for best opening horror sequence of the year.

Best of 2013 - Brett's Take

Top 10

Overall, this was a solid year with a handful of stand-out films, and then a long list of enjoyable movies. I didn't see a lot of movies that I’d consider “bad” and my only real disappointment was that I didn't get to catch any really noteworthy foreign horror outside of English-language stuff from England and Canada.

10. V/H/S 2
I wished the final two features would have been full-length films instead of shorts.
