Mikey Roe hosts Feed The Beast on the Travel Channel, and can be seen starting October 10th in The Houses October Built, a new found footage film from director Bobby Roe.
Beneath the fake blood and cheap masks of countless haunted house attractions across the country, there are whispers of truly terrifying alternatives. Looking to find an authentic, blood-curdling good fright for Halloween, five friends set off on a road trip in an RV to track down these underground Haunts. Just when their search seems to reach a dead end, strange and disturbing things start happening and it becomes clear that the Haunt has come to them…
How did you get involved with The Houses October built?
I had been hosting TV, with the Travel Channel for two years, at the time Bobby came to me about the idea. He wanted me for the role, but I was shooting, Feed The Beast at the time. Luckily, we finished shooting that show three days before Houses went into production. Halloween, being my favorite holiday and my love of horror films, made my first feature an amazing experience.
How would you sell the film to the uninitiated?
This film is a type of style you have never seen before. Five friends in an RV in search of the most extreme underground haunt in the country. It's all fun and games until we find what we are looking for, or better, when IT finds us. We were able to involve real haunted houses, real scare actors, and real patrons as characters in the movie. I like to say we did the "Borat of Horror Films"
Was there ever a time during filming when you felt genuinely scared by something?
There was a time we were shooting a camping scene near a haunt in Louisiana and a scare actor came out of the woods out of nowhere while I was delivering lines, its scared the hell out of me, but the cameras kept rolling as we talked with him. It is now one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
Tell us about " Feed the Beast"
Feed The Beast is a show, I created for Travel Channel, that takes me around the country in search of the nation's best "Late Night Food". I would hit four of the best joints, pen past midnight till the morning, and crown one as the "Best Late Night Spot" in that city. I had an absolute blast doing that show, interacting with the late night crowd and eating some amazing "fourth meals".
Halloween's coming up, do you have any rituals? Favorite memories?
I take Halloween very serious, especially my costumes. I like to really nail whoever I am going as. Living in L.A. its almost a week long even due to every one doing parties on different nights leading up to actual Halloween. Of course, we hit up a couple haunted houses as well, but after shooting this movie they better step up their game to get a scare out of me.
