The horror world received news that the 4th entry in the Wrong Turn series will be available on October 18th, 2011. Like parts 2 & 3, the latest offering will be a direct to DVD release as well.
The original Wrong Turn was decent (for some reason, I have a soft spot for movies that involve cannibalistic, inbred mutants in remote areas), and unlike most sequels, and REALLY unlike most direct to DVD sequels, many people (myself included) thought the dark campy fun of part 2 was actually superior. Part 3, however, was a stinker, but they all followed the same family of mutants, the same location, and the same story.
Part 4 appears to break with that formula, and seems to be a prequel of sorts, which really baffles me because it was never mentioned that this family of mutants were lunatics released from a defunct mental institution. As was explained earlier in the series, the family refused to leave after the mines and lumber mill closed...and without much other dating prospects, they began keeping it in the family, resulting in offspring that was "crazier and uglier than the last one". I guess it doesn't eliminate the "Crazy from the get-go" that this one seems to be going for - after all, you would have to be a little nuts to have kids with your sister.
Make sure to check out the franchise trailer that was released with this announcement. It seems to have a "Saw" vibe to it. And seeing as it was directed by Declan O'Brien, who did Wrong Turn 3 and Syfy's "Sharktopus", this could either be really bad or good bad. Either way, I'll watch it.
