"The Forest" Trailer Harkens Back to the Days of the J-Horror Craze
If you ever find yourself pining for the days when the horror genre was dominated by Asian-inspired flicks, you’re going to want to watch the new trailer for The Forest. It’s got everything you’ve been missing. Vengeful ghosts, a soundtrack full of spooky, throaty noises and a ghastly mystery which our attractive leads must unravel.
In the trailer, Sara (Natalie Dormer) travels to Japan in search of her twin sister. Rumor is that her twin entered into the infamous Aokigahara Forest, a place long-known as a hotbed of suicides. It also has a reputation for being haunted, which means no one is too keen to help Sara on her journey into the forest. Eventually she finds herself a pair of hunky sidekicks and the three of them go off in search of her sister. The one rule? Stay on the path. She immediately breaks that rule and from there it’s all eerie apparitions and screaming.
While the film is fiction, Aokigahara Forest and its sad history are both real. The trailer so desperately wants you to know this that it ends with some helpful suggestions for Google searches you can perform to learn more.
The Forest is the directorial debut of Jason Zada. It was co-written by David S. Goyer, Nick Antosca, Ben Ketai and Sarah Cornwell. You can see it in theaters on Jan. 8, 2016.
