Warner Sells Made to Order DVD's

Warner Bro's is blazing new trails with DVD distribution this week with their new Warner Archive. It's essentially "on Demand DVD printing".

This seems like it's a win-win for everyone involved. Warner Bro's will save tons of money by not printing up massive amounts of obscure titles for distribution, and as a fan you will get the chance to explore tons of older films that would have been impossible to own a hard copy of before. It's a very interesting response to the burgeoning on-demand, made-to-order culture, and shockingly for a big studio, a pretty intelligent one.

There are only 4 horror titles available right now and they're pretty old. Those are "Crescendo", "Crisis", "The Kiss" and "Blood Runs Cold". It remains to be seen how current they'll get with their horror titles, but you would have to assume for such a big studio that WB has quite a few horror gems in their vaults.

There's something more to this though. What about all of those small DVD companies? Could this be a boon for companies like Synapse or Blue Underground, who often struggle to make ends meet in the digital age? If this idea takes off, it might even become something akin to the online vanity book publishing market, where Indie filmmakers can have their discs printed on Demand. In short, the possibilities are definitely interesting.
