Trailer For "The Story of Anvil"

We've talked about this once or twice in passing, but I figured I'd put something more official here. "Anvil: the Story of Anvil," has a new trailer released that actually raises my expectation for the documentary just a little. My overarching concern remains that there simply isn't much there. Ninety-five percent of metal fans respond with a confused look when the name Anvil is mentioned, so the documentary is going to have to excel on its merit.

It doesn't carry the immediate intrigue of Iron Maiden's upcoming feature, nor does it have the history of the documentary about heavy metal in Brazil. The best this film could turn out to be is a solid underdog story, but the difficulty lies in that the audience already sort of knows how the story ends. Anvil hasn't made any grand comeback (although the results of the press they'll get from the film remain to be seen.)

This might be the last chance for a band who simply didn't have things work in their favor (they're not unique in this, see also: The Union Underground, The Agents, Jurassic 5.) Although it seems like the filmmaker is almost trying to portray this as a backward, real life "This is Spinal Tap." The ultimate direction and message of the documentary remains to be seen.

Still, it looks like it might be decently enjoyable. We'll have to wait and see.
