There are a few titles whose absence from DVD boggles my mind. If you are a long time collector there is no doubt you’ve gone the off-region route a few times to secure a title that you simply couldn’t live without. Now if those titles happen to be cinema obscure like “Incesto Sacrale” or “Orgasmo Nero” living with an off region release and a moderately reliable, after-market modified all-region DVD player seems, well, somewhat reasonable. A little like accepting the spotty quality of 8mm stag loops in days of yore.
But why, in the name of God’s banana hammock should I have to pay $20 for some fuckstick in Knawbone, Indiana to transfer Ken Russell’s seminal witch-hunt madhouse “The Devils” onto DVD-R, just to sate my inner Collectosaurus. Why? Because Warner Bros. put the kibosh on a ‘Devil’s DVD that was slated for a May 2008 release. Fuck you Warner Bros.
Also lamentably absent from DVD is Cameron Crowe’s 1st producer credit “The Wild Life”. A film in which Chris Penn turns in the performance of his career as cocksure moron wrestler/partyboy Tom Drake. Seriously, Tom Drake is a hell of a lot more fun than his template character Jeff Spicoli. “The Wild Life” has a star-studded cast including Lea Thompson, Randy Quaid, Eric Stoltz, and Rick Moranis. But fuck those guys; it’s the likes of Lee Ving, Dick Rude and Kitten Natividad that make this thing a must-see. Oh, that and the fact that this is the mother of all cameo films, which is doubly great since there is virtually no story to speak of.
My third most coveted DVD is the lightly regarded, little known 80’s creature feature “Humongous”. I remember very little about this one except that the monster has it’s origins in a nasty opening rape scene. But you gotta love the tagline and the poster and on that score alone, there should be a DVD.
What are your most desired unprinted DVD titles?
