Nic Cage in Pay the Ghost

Nicolas Cage Runs Afoul of the Supernatural in "Pay the Ghost" Trailer

These days Nicolas Cage is at his best – or his worst, or maybe they’re the same thing? – when he’s playing a character who stumbles upon the machinations of entities much larger than himself. In the trailer for his latest film, Pay the Ghosthe takes a break from neo-pagan cults, the founding fathers and angry deities and focuses his energy on some sort of child-abducting monster.

Near the start of the trailer, Professor Mike Cole (Cage) and his son Charlie (Jack Fulton) are seen hanging out at a Halloween carnival, getting super excited about ice cream. However, when Cole turns away to pay for said ice cream, Charlie vanishes. Cole kicks into full professor mode and begins researching children who go missing on Halloween. While doing so he discovers that – wait for it – something bigger is going on. According to his research, kids who go missing on Halloween are much less likely to ever be found and he assumes this means something. The trailer then jumps right to the conclusion of child-abducting monster and from there it’s a hodgepodge of demon/ghost movie clichés, explosions, car crashes and vaguely threatening snippets of dialogue.

Pay the Ghost also stars Sarah Wayne Callies of Walking Dead fame who will once again be playing a mom whose kid wanders off at inopportune times. It opens in theaters on Sept. 25.
