Netflix Streaming Friday - "Birdemic: Shock and Terror"
Anyone left with a Netflix subscription after their egregious price hike equal to a gallon and a half of gasoline is in for a treat. Over the years, there's been many films that have fought for the title of "worst movie ever". For a while, "Plan 9 From Outer Space" had that title locked down. Then there was "Manos: The Hands of Fate". "Manos" had a good run, holding on to the crown until a little gem called "Troll 2" came around. The Italian masterpiece was finally dethroned by Tommy Wisseau and his disgustingly pale, pock-mocked ass in "The Room". When Wisseau proclaimed that Lisa was "tearing him a-part", many felt as if "The Room" would have a "Manos"-esque title reign, holding onto the prize for decades. Little did they know that James Nguyen was working on a little film called "Birdemic: Shock and Terror" that would rock the world of bad movies five short years later.
Simply put, "Birdemic" is the worst film I've ever watched. Yet, I absolutely love it. Everything about it is so amazingly awful that I can't really comprehend that it's a real movie. I think the intention here was to create a "romantic thriller", as the trailer puts it, that's also a metaphor for climate change, but instead the end product was one of the most surreal, bizarre comedies I've ever seen. For the first hour you've got a terrible romance story rivaling "The Room" for wooden acting, awkward dialogue and hilarity , but then, oh man, there's the last half hour. When the killer birds finally surface, the reveal is one of the greatest things ever filmed. When I caught this in theaters, I was legitimately afraid I was going to throw up I was laughing so hard and for so long.
