Killzone 2 Reviews Are In

The original "Killzone" is probably my all time favorite videogame. In the First Person Shooter, you play any one in a group of resistance fighters taking on invaders from "Helghast", Nazi-like mutants who when unmasked remind one an awful lot of Darth Vader at the end of "Return of the Jedi".

It was intially billed as a "Halo-Killer" for Sony when it came out on the PS2, although ultimately it failed to live up to that hype. Although the gameplay is highly addictive, and it has a great balance of shoot-em-up and strategy, ultimately it feels like a game rushed out the door. For all the love I have for it, it's probably one of the most visually glitchy games I've ever played.

It's that kind of potential and frustration that has led to so much hype surrounding "Killzone 2". Through all the pre-rendered video controversies and delays, I have not only held out hope for the game, but secretly figured it would be the title that would make me bite the bullet and buy a PS3. My financial situation is going to stop that from happening, but it doesn't mean I can't drool at all the news coming out about it.

The great guys over at Giant Bomb, one of the most honest and informative gaming sites on the net, have finally gotten their hands on the game and released their review. It looks... promising. Here's a quote:

Killzone 2 successfully iterates upon the formulas and standards of console first-person shooters in ways that make it feel fresh, and it does all that while looking absolutely outstanding. If you're the least bit interested in first-person shooting and you own a PlayStation 3, Killzone 2 should be near the top of your list.

IGN also liked it:

Killzone 2 is an outstanding evolution of the franchise, a bullet and adrenaline-fueled rampage against an implacable enemy and a fantastic shooter for the PS3.

Finally, Gamespot isn't jazzed on the storyline, but praises the game in just about every other way:

Killzone 2 is a tremendous package, offering an exciting campaign and terrific competitive online play, neither of which create new paradigms for first-person shooters, but rather set new standards in subtle but significant ways. From groundbreaking visuals to well-crafted multiplayer maps, most of Killzone 2's individual elements stand out in a crowded genre, making its meager attempts at storytelling easy to ignore.

For those who aren't familiar, here's the official trailer for the game. "Killzone 2" should be hitting stores everywhere today (February 27th), so if you're a first person shooter fan, have at it!
