Mary Elizabeth Winstead in 10 Cloverfield Lane

J.J. Abrams Unveils Mysterious New "10 Cloverfield Lane" Trailer

Eight years after Cloverfield stomped gleefully into our lives, along comes the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, seemingly out of nowhere. This new project from Producer J.J. Abrams and his team is a sort-of-sequel – or “blood relative,” if you will – to the original film. While, the connection between the two films isn’t immediately spelled out in lights, there are hints.

The trailer opens during what appears to be an average game night in a perfectly average home. John Goodman and two younger companions (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr.) are locked in a tight game of Life. This is followed up with equally-average scenes of doing puzzles, making lunch, etc. Everything stops being average when something happens which rattles the walls of their home. Turns out, they’re living in some kind of compound and Goodman is holding them against their wills, at least for part of the time. Things continue to deteriorate until Winstead makes a break for the door and Goodman announces she’s going to get them all killed and that “something’s coming.”

10 Cloverfield Lane, which was directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by Josh Campbell & Matthew Stuecken, ditches the first person style of the previous Cloverfield flick for a more traditional approach. Was this a good choice? What’s really going on with that compound? Those questions and more will be answered when 10 Cloverfield Lane hits theaters on March 11.
