It’s easy to get caught up in the throes of the latest horror trend. Whether we are trapped in a deluge of zombie apocalypses or spooky ghost houses with slamming cupboards, these things can turn into an inescapable tidal wave dragging us into the abyss of commonplace.
Sometimes what we need to snap us out of that mediocrity is a good old fashioned, survive all night, viscerally charged horror thriller. If there’s anyone that can accomplish that, it’s Jeremy Saulnier, the director of 2013’s excellent Blue Ruin and 2007’s criminally underseen Murder Party. Plus, there’s no way of getting around it. This cast is fascinating. Dainty, Imogen Poots and Alia Shawkat, and the always interesting Anton Yelchin playing punk rockers who are being hunted by Patrick Stewart who is playing the leader of a bunch of a skinheads.
With any luck, Mr. Saulnier will have gone for 3 for 3 and given us another great thriller. This does not seem to have as much of the tongue in your cheek dark humor as his previous works, however with this cast and his directorial efforts Green Room might be the violent, dark, survival masterpiece we are looking for.
