In becoming a fan of horror films, I have turned a blind eye to any other medium of horror. The last horror novel I read was by R.L. Stine, the closest I get to horror influenced music is Alice Cooper or Rammstein, and I don't seek out horror inspired art, because I have this weird stereotype in my mind that if I did, I would probably have to buy a tapestry and lava lamp to accent it properly.
Having these hipster horror preconceptions are the reason why I feel that horror photography could be my happy medium. I point to Joshua Hoffine who uses practical effects to create eye-catching horror inspired photographs. He describes on his website how he sets up each photo shoot like a short film with costumes, elaborate props, fog machines, and special effects make-up and really the attention to detail is noticeable in each of his photographs.
He also has a blog where he shows off his latest work and how he created the effects in the photograph. My personal favorite has to be the Lady Bathory photograph. Definitely give his work a browse.
