Lights Out

To begin our week capping off the musical year that was in 2012, Chris and I decided the first thing we should do was sit down and figure out what this year was, what its trends were, what it means for the future, and who the superstars were. We had come from two very different 2012’s in metal (if you haven’t noticed, we have different tastes,) so we decided to get some things down and see if a lengthy discussion couldn’t iron out what the final verdict of the year was. Both as a fan of music, and someone who dabbles in it, I'm a big fan of the vintage revolution that has taken hold in large swaths of the rock and metal world. There's something about stripped-down, simplified, authentic music that is appealing on a level no amount of modern flash can replicate. As more and more bands find new ways to combine computerized sounds with nearly inhuman displays of fretboard acrobatics, the old-school approach of building a song out of a riff and then playing it as a band holds more and more power.
