Brendon Small

Album Review: Dethklok - "Dethalbum III"

What makes Dethklok unique among gimmick bands (which is not an insult, merely a fact,) is that the “band” plays the role totally straight. Most metal fans’ exposure to the blend of comedy and metal comes through bands like GWAR or Haunted Garage, who make no secret of their over-the-top motives. Even the mighty Spinal Tap played up their persona, skillfully reveling in and mocking the signature characteristics of metal.

Album Review: Brendon Small's "Galaktikon"

Brendon Small’s “Galaktikon” is as much a story about finishing what you started as it is the divorce of the galaxy’s most popular superhero. Halfway invested prior to the recording of “Dethalbum II,” Small shelved this ad-hoc unfinished project until such a time as he could return to it and complete it. From that end, “Galaktikon” is anything but a typical vanity project, and shows not only Small’s dedication to his artistic exploration, but also his loyalty to Gene Hoglan and the musicians who helped him create it. He doesn’t want their work to be for nothing.

The Man Behind "Metalocalypse" - Words with Brendon Small

He is the creator of beloved, fan-favorite shows like “Home Movies” and “Metalocalypse.” He is the man behind the phenomenon that is Dethklok, whom legions of fans dutifully keep up with and flock to their shows. He is the man in charge of the upcoming album “Galaktikon,” and probably has his hands full with six or seven others things, too. Mere mortals call him Brendon Small, and he and I had to chance to sit down and talk about a number of subjects, including music, career paths, television shows and trends, Iron Maiden and of course, horror.
M. Drew: First and foremost, you are a busy man this month. You’ve got “Galaktikon” coming out right around the corner, and season four of “Metalocalypse” all in one month. Do you think you’re ready to handle those two things at the same time?
