WARNING: This review contains spoilers for the second season of Ash vs. Evil Dead, as well as its finale. Think about it like the Necronomicon: read it at your own risk.
As the second season of Starz’s Ash vs. Evil Dead came screaming toward its close, there were a lot of questions that needed answering. How would Ruby handle her newfound mortality? Would Ash be able to bring Pablo back from the dead? And would our strong-chinned hero ever make it back to Jacksonville?
The second season finale picks up right where its penultimate episode left off; with Ash locked in a basement, battling one nasty Deadite, while Ruby and Kelly try to make their way to the cabin. After heading back to the 80’s in a last-ditch effort to resurrect a bisected Pablo. If they can travel back to before all of this nastiness began and stop it before it starts, the world will be saved once and for all!
After defeating the Deadite, escaping the basement, finding out that all of this was another one of Baal’s tricks, fighting him, and bringing the whole cabin burning down, Ash and Kelly make it back to the future, with Pablo in tow. Ruby, is not so lucky. Once 80's Ruby shows up at the cabin, she and her future self battle it out, and the Ruby that we know and love doesn't make it. Once safely back in the 21st Century, Ash is treated to a hero’s welcome in Elk Grove and all's right with the world, right?
Right through the close of its second season, Ash vs. Evil Dead proves that it has found its footing and it isn’t going anywhere. As this reviewer has mentioned time and time again, this season really shines where the first season struggled. As far as converting the story of the Evil Dead into a series format, think of season one like the training wheels and season 2 as a motorcycle! And with the second season wrapping up, I would be remiss not to mention the level of ingenuity it must take to be able to come up with a different blood-splattering death to use for the opening sequence every week, and they never failed to shock and amaze.
Thanks for sticking with us through Season 2, we will be right back with you next fall for Season 3! And when you’re watching the finale, make sure you stick around for the after-credit sequence!
