Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 Episode 9 - "Home Again"

We’ve reached the penultimate episode, y’all. You know what they say, two seasons forward and twenty-five years back. The loss of Pablo has left our heroes pretty well wrecked, and the only option seems to be to return to where, and when, it all began. The best-laid plans are very rarely made after downing half a bottle of liquor in one swig, but Ash does always do things his own way. Ruby recites some passages from the Necronomicon, and all of a sudden the three are back in 1982.

This episode is the best kind of deja vu. Fans may remember that season one also ended back at the cabin, and so it feels only fitting that this season should do the same, with a twist. “Home Again” is chock full of references to the original. We get to meet the archeologist who originally found the book, along with his wife who we meet once she’s a Deadite chained up in the cellar of the house. We get to see the horrifying, anthropomorphized trees (this time with eyes and mouths!) And, of course, we get racing shots of cameras flying through the woods, the cabin rushing towards us and then fleeing into the distance.

“Home Again” is a perfect distillation of everything that’s great about Ash vs. Evil Dead. At its best, watching an episode of this show lets you relive all of the things that you always loved about Sam Raimi’s original films, and you get an increasingly smarmy Bruce Campbell to boot! On the whole, season two has been much stronger and more consistent than the preceding season, hopefully the finale will be no different. And since Starz has greenlit a third season, we’re guaranteed at least ten more episodes of gore and mayhem next fall!
