Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 Episode 4 - "DUI"

Another week, another host of ghoulies to fight, but something is different in “DUI.” The gang has split in two and, as a result, we are treated to an equally bifurcated episode. Along with our regularly scheduled A plot, involving Ash chasing the Necronomicon, we have Kelly and Ruby, who have set out on their own to kill Ruby’s spawn. The episode hops back and forth between the two stories, each of our pairs fighting the forces of darkness.

While it’s a blast to get to see Ruby and Kelly get their hands dirty and be the center of their own story line, it does feel a tad nonsensical that they took off together in the first place. I am certain that following Ash around can be tiresome, especially when his plans don’t exactly work out the way they should, but Kelly has been deeply suspicious of Ruby from the jump and it’s hard to believe that one little conversation with Pablo in a bar could set her off like that. What is even harder to belive is that the fact that the two women have taken off on their own has somehow completely escapted Ash and Pablo, who are apparently so focused on their mission that they didn’t notice half their team disappeared; not exactly the most desirable quality in your crime-fighting partners.

The episode delivers, as usual, on great gore (particularly the shots of Ash’s dad’s nasty goopy head) and action (like the sequence where Ash rides the possessed Delta like a bucking bronco before plunging his chainsaw directly into its engine), but the branched storytelling does feel a tad disjointed at times. This show has certainly earned the faith that its audience no doubt has in it, and one episode is not going to throw this fan off, but I hope we bring our gang back together soon, or at least force them to deal with the ramifications of their separation.
