Ash Vs Evil Dead Season 2 Episode 1 - "Home"

El Jefe and his crew are back, just in time to start your spooky season off right. At the end of its first season, Ash vs Evil Dead was a huge hit, boasting an 8.7/10 average score on IMDB and a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, the people had spoken. The writers, directors, and actors managed to take the tale of a group of friends in a cabin in the woods and make it exponentially larger, sustaining the story throughout and building a pretty interesting world.

After making a deal with Ruby at the close of last season’s finale, Ash and friends have made it to the promised land: Jacksonville, Florida. Our crew seem to be living it up, or rather, Ash seems to be living it up while Kelly and Pablo work for tips, when some Deadites show up and really put a damper on the festivities. Somewhere in middle America, things have gotten out of hand and Ruby needs their help.

Whatever apprehension there may have been that Ash wouldn’t have the staying power to pull off a second season will certainly be alleviated by this blood-soaked premier. After some admitted missteps in the last season, this episode goes back to the roots, showcasing a ton of exquisite practical effects which are occasionally enhanced with the help of CGI.

Director Rick Jacobson has the Sam Raimi style down and uses it to great effect. Scene after scene of quick cuts, lopsided camera angles, and some gratuitous spewing of deep black vomit all hearken back to the man that started it all. There is also a lovely homage to Drag Me to Hell that is sure to put a smile on the face of every fan that catches it.

If this episode is any indication, Ash certainly isn’t out of the woods yet, and we wouldn’t have him any other way.
