The Italian Zombie Movie, Part 2: Zombie Atrocity (REVIEW)

I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t exactly looking forward to watching this movie. Last week, I reviewed the first film in the “Italian Zombie Film” saga, “Zombie Abomination”. Despite being able to get that unique Italian horror vibe right for some stretches in the film, I ultimately walked away unimpressed and disappointed. Worse yet, due to the horrible pacing problems and the totally unsatisfying ending in the first film in the series, the sequel, “Zombie Atrocity” really had to deliver to make up for the weaknesses in the original and to turn the series around.

The Italian Zombie Movie, Part 1: Zombie Abomination (REVIEW)

I’m a big fan of Italian horror films. While not always perfect, they have a unique style that lead to a viewing experience that’s one of a kind. The colors, the music, the gore, the women, the religious overtones, all of them contribute to a style that’s unmistakably Italian, for lack of a better word. When I saw that there was a super low budget American film called “The Italian Zombie Movie”, I was curious. Could a super low budget film get that vibe right? Could a director who’s last name isn’t Fulci, Deodato or Argento produce a film with that feel? Turns out, sort of.

Mourning Wood (REVIEW)

Editing is an extremely important process. Regardless of how good you are at something, your first pass will always benefit from some additional thought and refinement. Editing becomes especially important when most of the creative process is handled by one or two people. Often times, low budget films fail because so much of the creative process is handled by a select few individuals, and they become far too attached to the end product to let anything go, or can’t step back and realize what does and doesn’t need refined and tweaked.

Trailer for "The Night Shift" Released

I'm a big fan of horror comedies, so I was pretty darn excited to read about "The Night Shift," a promising new independent film brought to us by Fighting Owl Films. The film, based on a short story of the same name, follows Rue, the undead caretaker of a cemetery, who must protect the graveyard from it's supernatural inhabitants.

Cemetery Man (Dellamorte Dellamore) (REVIEW)

We're just over the halfway mark to Halloween and many horror fans have no doubt already revisited many of their favorite films. In a time centered around nostalgia it becomes increasingly more difficult to take in something new, and its even harder to find genre flicks that last. Despite obvious comparisons that can be made to films like "Dead Alive," (one of my absolute favorites), Michelle Soavi's "Cemetery Man (Dellamorte Dellamore)" succeeds in being both a popcorn flick and an art feature, and should be a welcome addition to any horror fan's Autumn lineup.

Return of the Living Dead: Part II (REVIEW)

The original “Return of the Living Dead” is a true classic and one of my favorite genre movies. Mixing equal parts horror and comedy, the original film managed to be incredibly fresh and entertaining, and set the bar for what a non-Romero zombie film could be. Since the original came out, “Return of the Living Dead” has become it’s own series, spawning four sequels. Strangely enough, despite my love for the first film, I’ve never seen any of the sequels and have now set out to right this issue. The question is, does “Return of the Living Dead: Part II” live up to it’s name?
