Over at the podcast, we've been working hard to make sure every one of our episodes is available for download, which is how we arrived at BGH Classic. By selling back episodes, we're able to keep the lights on around here, and we very much appreciate the support. Now we're trying something new. After a lazy summer break, Professor John Shelton and I have returned to the microphones with a new episode of Sophisticult Cinema, your favorite dose of audible fanciness.

We're calling this Sophisticult Cinema: Season 2: The Sophisticultier.

After nearly four years of podcasting, we at Bloody Good Horror have decided to introduce our first ever spinoff show -- "SophistiCult Cinema."

Horror fans got a one week reprieve from shelling out dough at the box office this week. That is unless you live near one of the 11 theaters that screened the Ryan Reynolds Iraq War flick "Buried," which Lionsgate rolled out to a select number of theaters on Friday. The advance word is that a full release is possible in a couple of weeks. Now, with all due warnings about ridiculously small sample size out of the way, let's look at some precedence for how things might play out for "Buried."

If it seems like there's been a lot of horror in your diet as of late, you're not just spending too much time on "Twilight" fan boards. Since the weekend of August 20th we've had five straight weeks of new horror releases, a streak that will be broken this coming weekend. I'm counting "Machete," so depending on how you classify, your milage may vary.

Since the dawn of recorded sound, man has yearned for insightful and humorous horror commentary. In the early days the phonograph gave way to radio, radio gave way to the internet, which eventually gave way to the smallest, yet most powerful force the aural world has ever known... The MP3. Voices rose from the masses, voices with ideas -- "Down with Remakes, Up with French Horror, Champion the Small Wonders!"

If the moderate temperatures (in the Northeast, anyway) and blockbuster fare at the box office have anyone feeling a little confused, well, join the club. It turns out though, that Sony's idea of rolling out their late season tentpole "2012," on this the 46th weekend of the year, has some precedent. In fact, you have to go all the way back to 2002 before you hit a group of new releases that doesn't feature a $150+ million film. So we probably should be thinking of the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving as a mini-blockbuster season.

If you're wondering why Milla is so startled, it might have have something to do with the fact that her snoozy alien abduction pic posted a surprisingly nice opening. Coming in at $12.5 million, "The Fourth Kind" was strong enough for a fourth place finish in a crowded weekend that included four new films. "Fourth Kind" managed to outperform the other new horror flick of the week, Richard Kelly's "The Box," which slunk home just shy of $8 million.

When are we all finally going to admit it to ourselves: the trailers for "2012" are fucking sweet.
