"Brutal Legend" Dumps Dio for Tim Curry

I haven't spoken much about the upcoming metal-infused adventure game "Brütal Legend" starring Jack Black, mostly because I think Metalocalypse took metal irony, perfected it, and then beat it to death. However, with cameos from the likes of Ozzy Ozbourne and Rob Halford, 'Legend' should be an entertaining, if not very fun game. Up until recently, that fun included the vocal talent of one Ronnie James Dio (Black Sabbath, Rainbow, etc.), but that is no longer. I'm not sure of all of the details, but it sounds as if the devs realized that while including Dio is a metal no-brainer, he might not have the voice acting chops to lend to a character that is ever-present in the game and constantly sparring with Jack Black.

"Ronnie James Dio is an amazing singer and truly one of the great figures of Metal, but as the character of Doviculus evolved, we realized that Tim Curry was a better fit for the part," Schafer said in a statement to Kotaku. "Anyone who has seen his amazing performance as the Lord of Darkness in the movie Legend knows why we cast him in the role of Doviculus, Emperor of the Tainted Coil."

I may be slapped for saying this, but I always found Dio to be the creepy aunt of the metal scene, and I love Tim Curry, so this is great news to me. For those of you who haven't seen/heard anything about this game, this trailer should give you a good idea about what you're in for.

Tim Schafer Explains Why Dio's Out Of Brütal Legend, Tim Curry's In

Saw some footage of it while watching highlights from E3 and it looks pretty awesome. It's more open world that I thought and despite my hatred for Jack Black it looks to be pretty funny.

As far as Dio, I've never really understood why people love that guy so much. he's a like a creepy D&D kid with a perm. Tim Curry will be a lot better.

I've been keeping an eye on this game, and I still have high hopes for it as it combines two of my favorite hobbies--metal and video gaming. But I don't know, something just doesn't feel right about it. Might be Jack Black. I'll just have to wait and see.

As for Dio, he is sort of metal royalty (after all, he's credited with the creation of the "devil horns" hand sign,) but I think he's becoming overexposed with, as you say, the advent of metal-ironic humor. And at age 66, I think his best days are behind him. Curry will better serve for the character they want.

i'm lucky, i got the chance to go see dio and anthrax play for free and had backstage passes to meet dio and the band (this was thanks to my friend who was then working for manowar). it was an awesome show. afterwards i got to meet dio, and he even gave me a hug. nicest little dude in metal. he is right next to mark in awesome little guys who have given me hugs.

but what they are saying about his voice acting chops makes sense. he is a fairly soft spoken kind of guy, and i don't think he could give a commanding performance.
