"Dante's Inferno" Looks Familiar

Since its cryptic unveiling in December, EA's action title (very) loosely based on the Inferno portion of The Divine Comedy has had gamers and literature nerds alike intrigued. Recently, a more detailed trailer and a handful of concept art pieces have been released, and many people have been left scratching their heads. The most recent trailer seems to bring to light a very liberal re-imagining of the story and characters, and some glaring similarities to more than a few mega-popular games from recent years:

I can't claim to be an expert on Dante's Inferno, but I'd be willing to bet that the original vision did not include Dante as an ultra-ripped superhero wearing bondage gear and wielding a gigantic scythe, or Ceberus as a hybrid vagina multi-penis monster with a toothy grin that's equal parts Troma and "Little Shop of Horrors."

If I can remove my snob hat for a moment, I will say that I did enjoy "God of War," and I'd relish an opportunity to at least try what appears to be an unashamed clone on my system of choice. I just think that maybe with a darker outlook and less steroids, "Dante's Inferno" could have been a genuinely scary game. I still have ample time to be surprised though, so I'll back off for now.
