"Left 4 Dead" DLC and SDK Announced, Sorta

More than a month after it was promised, fans of "Left 4 Dead" can finally begin to salivate at coming additions to both the XBOX360 and PC versions of the game. A press release was posted on the Steam website today (somewhat) detailing some major additions and updates coming this spring:

The first L4D DLC — dubbed the L4D Survival Pack -- is due for release this spring and introduces a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode . A Critic's Choice Edition of the game will be heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack.

In addition, for PC gamers and aspiring developers, the first Left 4 Dead release for the Source Software Development Kit (Source SDK) will allow the creation of custom Left 4 Dead campaigns that will be discoverable via L4D's matchmaking system. The SDK update is also due for release this spring, and is free of charge to all owners of L4D on the PC.

If I were to take a stab at what the "Survival" mode will entail, I think it would be very similar to the "Horde" mode from Gears of War 2 where you and some buddies fight wave after wave of infected to see how long you can last. As for the maps, I can only hope that they are creating two entirely new maps and not just making the co-op maps versus-enabled.

Lastly, I'm not a PC gamer by any stretch, but I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of ridiculous shit comes from that community, even if it's just watching YouTube tours and dreaming of the possibilities.

In case you thought the blue balls were over, the release date for this update is "Spring 2009." Expect to hear an update on that sometime in July. Until then, can't we all just cross all of our crossables that the Crossroads Mall from Dawn of The Dead actually finds its way onto consoles?
